New Blog Title!

For those of you who have read this blog (about ... hmm ... one person?), you may have noticed that I changed the title. "Garnet.Artist's Blog" was getting a little old - and it was rather unoriginal. "Battered and Bent by the Thrashings of the Mind" sounds a tad better, though it is lengthy. I haven't created any new poems, songs, or stories lately, but I'll get back soon with a new piece that was battered and bent by my mind.

Planet Yumthing

Hello, blog readers (if there are any):
I was searching for a site that I remember liking, and I can't find it. It was planetyumthing.net, and I think it may have been taken down.
The site was about doing-it-yourself (DIY) and crafty things that I thought were interesting. I was informed of the site when I got a book, Planet Yumthing DIY. It was by Ela Jaynes and Darren Greenblatt.
Ela and Darren, if you're out there and are obsessively Googling your own names for fun, please put your site back up! I miss the cool crafty ideas and the updates about neat stuff to make yourself. Thanks!
And for those of you who are curious about the cool crafty stuff I've been going on about, here are some ideas, courtesy of Planet Yumthing DIY (published by Bantam Books, an imprint of Random House Books):

- Cut off the bottom of an oversized rock concert tee just below the arms. Roll over the upper edge, sew it down, and make yourself a drawstring to thread through. Cut some fringe at the bottom if you like. There you have it - a rock and roll SKIRT!

- Mix 1 cup fresh strawberries (cut up, leaves removed), 1 tbsp water, 2 tbsp cornstarch, and 2 tbsp milk. Mash the ingredients into a paste and apply to your face for an awesome face mask. Relax in the bathtub for 20 minutes and rinse off.

- Cut hot dogs into thirds, coat them with barbecue sauce, and place on a (nonstick-sprayed) baking sheet. Bake at 350 for 15 minutes. When they're done, place the pieces of hot dog on wooden skewers with pineapple chunks. Serve them with mustard to a lot of friends.

Remember, Ela and Darren, if you're there, put up your site, please!
Thanks so much.

Unearthed Poemage

I'm back! Recently I found some poems from a while ago and decided to post them because they were just so cramped in the journal inside which they were originally placed. Here is one:
rewrite
Flipping chalkboards
and whiteboards
nestled in the wall,
layer after layer
So you can change
what you say
and get a fresh slate
No need to erase
what was written
You simply choose another
area
into which your words
are placed.
Life is not a series of boards
that are switched when you
mess
up.
You only get one
And you must write with
permanent
marker
Because those words -
the ones you spit into the air
are not erasable
Be careful what you
write on your board,
because you have
no

I'm Back/Happy V-Day

My apologies, I have been very busy and have had very little spare time.
For everyone out there, Happy Valentine's Day! Yes, you might be single and depressed, but that's no way to act on a holiday. Just be happy, et cetera, love life if you don't have a person to love.
I haven't written any poetry in a long time. Look out for some soon - I'll be busy over the long weekend. However, I would like to promote some songs:

Infinite Night by Carrie Rodriguez

Her Morning Elegance by Oren Lavie
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_HXUhShhmY

These are two of my absolute favorite songs. I would also recommend anything by My Chemical Romance, especially Welcome to the Black Parade.
My friend A.A. recommended another artist yesterday. I tried listening to him and he's actually okay!
Chicago by Sufjan Stevens

Thanks for looking at my blog. Check back soon for updates!

Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! My family is here and I can't wait for the turkey...
Changes to the standard menu this year:
Chocolate Rum Cake instead of ?
Creamed Spinach instead of beans
Have a good day(s) off!
Remember, even if you don't have family to celebrate with you, take time to give thanks for everything you have. It's the right thing to do.

Flashbunny!

This is a cute site I found by an artist named Anand Nunnally. She is really very good - look at her sketches and watch her animations! There are also some dress-up games.

The Package

I wrote this recently. Hope you like it!

wrapped up in myself
scared of the outside world
extend your hand,
warm me with care
I take in this compassion-
and uncurl a finger
that tentatively touches
unknown air.
a wrist bends to reveal a pale hand
wrinkled and afraid
clenched for so long
a loving hand on a curved back
heat radiates through my bones
and i unwind and reveal
my sorrows.
an exposed area, the stomach appears
knowing that i am vulnerable
I am comfortable here

New Poem!

I also wrote this one last night, but i haven't named it yet.

she was utterly magnificent
as they all watched in wide-mouthed awe
feet a blur as her legs were
arms flailing in harmony with twirling hips
tendrils of the black worked themselves free about her face
gasping with bloody lips for breath
hands curling like snakes
twin eyes of twinkled ebony
she really had outdone herself
and then it was franctic
so she was too
and the chain about her ankle was taut
and her heart beat too quickly
and the floor came up to see her
and it was cold
she really had outdone herself

With Love,

I wrote this poem last night (8/14/08).
I must make clear that I have not experienced this. However, I have published the poem for the people out there who have experienced this or something like it, and if you want sympathy, I freely give it,

With Love
penning this is difficult
because I know it means our end
and you would be unhappy
with me
but i have to tell them
what you did
though it burns me inside
like that acid you conjured in chemistry
the one with the bubbles.
so i won't be seeing you
i know.
and i'm using the feather pen you gave me
after this is over i'll burn it
but not out of hate
out of love.
if i see it you will come into my thoughts again
and it hurts my heart to know that it's done.
do i love you? i guess. but forget me, i don't matter.
i'll be fine
really
with love,
